Abstract

The global expansion of electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as the increasing use of portable electronic devices and stationary energy storage systems, has led to a significant rise in demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Consequently, the number of spent batteries is rapidly increasing, making their environmentally safe and sustainable recycling a critical issue. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the chemical composition of lithium-ion batteries, recycling methods, including mechanical, pyrometallurgical, and hydrometallurgical approaches, environmental risks, and economic feasibility. The results indicate that efficient recycling can restore valuable metallic resources, reduce electronic waste, and contribute to environmental protection while maintaining operational safety.
